Wataru Kitamura (北村 航, Kitamura Wataru)
Background[]
Kitamura is a manga-only character from rival school Midoriyama in the series Prince of Tennis. He is in his 2nd Year of Middle School like all the other regulars for Midoriyama.
Appearance[]
Kitamura has a beauty mark on the right side of his chin.
Personality[]
He and his Midoriyama teammates are shown to be arrogant as while they were being interviewed by Shiba Saori.
History[]
Regionals[]
Kitamura and Midoriyama reach the quarterfinals of the Kanto Regional Tournament and meet Seigaku. He falsely predicted that Midoriyama will win 3-1. However, he lost to the Inui-Kaido pair 1-6 in Doubles 2 and turned out to be incorrect, with Midoriyama losing 3-0. His regular partner is Takase. They lose, but they were still able to go to the Nationals by getting second place in the consolation matches (overall sixth place).
Nationals[]
Kitamura and Midoriyama are eliminated by Joshuin Dai Fuzoku Shimizu in the first round of the Nationals.
Tennis Record[]
Playing Style and Techniques[]
Like all of the Midoriyama members, Kitamura’s form and ball control is impressive; he participated in an exercise using a metal pole as a replacement for a “wall” for practice, showing that he has confidence in his control and precision.
Kitamura seems to specialize in Doubles (as all of his recorded matches so far have been Doubles), showing that he and Takase had various attack patterns during their match against Seigaku. He seems to have some variation in his serves, as one of his serves curved wide enough for Inui to be unable to return it. He seems to try to think ahead, feeling that he would be wasting stamina if he tried to turn a game around at 0-40 at an early point in the game. Inoue noted that this was a tactic some pros used to conserve stamina.
However, this act of saving energy was not enough to outpace Kaido and Inui, and Kitamura and Takase’s endurance combined proved to be not a match for Kaido. His stamina seems to be either average or below average, and the lack of endurance costed Kitamura and Takase the match against the Kaido/Inui pair. He does not seem to be a National-level player, considering that he lost his match during Round 1 of Nationals. He usually pairs up with Takase or Minamoto.
