Also known as the Australian Formation Seal, Otori stands behind Shishido during the opponent’s serve with the Australian Formation. This formation uses the Shishido/Otori pair’s unorthodox movements to reduce the opponent’s options and limits the locations where an opponent returns the ball, destroying the surprise factor of the Australian Formation.

Utility[]

One way to reduce the opponent’s option is by returning directly at the net player and having Shishido crash the net, the option to hit a straight disappears and the option to lob is gone due to the tall Otori being at the back. Thus, a cross shot becomes the only option left, which allows Otori to move to the side to return the ball.
